Frank Woods was born in 1895 (Chesterton Q2-1895 3B:465), son of Henry William and Harriet WOODS (née ELSDEN).
1901 census...Aged 6, he was at Main Road, Six Mile Bottom, with his father Henry WOODS [35] railway signalman, born Old Ketton, Hampshire; his mother Harriet [34] born Burrough Green; sister Maud [10] born Burrough Green and brothers Tom [8], David [3] and William [1]. All the boys were born in Six Mile Bottom. 1911 census...Aged 16, a domestic gardener, he was at Coventry Cottage, Six Mile Bottom, with his parents, brothers Thomas, (farm labourer), David( farm labourer) and Willie. Also 5 new siblings, sisters Mabel [9] Freda [4] and Margaret [1] and brothers Harry [7] and Dennis [3]. All the new children were born in Six Mile Bottom. Of the 12 children borne by Harriet, one had died. |

He enlisted in Hull. The 11th Battalion, East Yorks was one of the Pals battalions, the "Hull Tradesmen" Having survived a spell in the Middle East, then the Somme and Oppy Wood, Frank was killed in action during trench raids on German positions in the region of Fresnoy on 8th November 1917 and his body was never identified. The 11th East Yorks lost 17 killed that day, only 4 have identified graves. |
